2nd July 2006 proved to be a day to remember for six
determined runners representing Michael Sobell House,
all taking part in this nationally renowned event.
The heat was very intense which affected the pace of
the race, the route starting from Piccadilly and finishing
just past Downing Street on Whitehall. In total 36,000
runners took part in this annual charity event which
wends its way around Trafalgar Square and takes in such
diverse landmarks as St Paul’s Cathedral and the
London Eye. The whole occasion took place in a very
“British” atmosphere with Union Jack flags
flying throughout the course and patriotic music blaring
out such as Land of Hope and Glory and the Dambusters.
As they said later, our runners were much inspired
by their companions during this gruelling event - the
‘electric’ atmosphere, the feeling of camaraderie
and well-being with so much mutual encouragement and
sharing of precious water bottles, and in particular
the chap competing in the event on crutches. Their spirits
were kept buoyant by the applause and cheering of the
spectators all the way round the course and the colourful
rhythms of a Caribbean steel band which accompanied
them.
Our thanks go to all our runners and the sponsorship
they raised for Michael Sobell House.
