Another great day, another great result. £21,833 net was the remarkable amount raised at the seventh annual MSH charity day held at Sandy Lodge Golf Club.
28 teams took the field for the 18 Hole Stableford competition at 12 noon after enjoying a leisurely morning with breakfast, putting competition and practice on the driving range under the eagle eye of the Club Professional.
Of the 28 teams, one had played with unchanged players since these days started in 2002, there was one new team and most of the remaining 26 teams had played on at least four or five previous occasions – the friendly atmosphere was therefore tremendous and from feedback it seems players had enjoyed yet another fun day out.
A new addition to the competitions this year was the Mulligan Competition with players having the opportunity to buy 3 balloons for £10. The balloons were then tied to their trolleys and players could release a balloon when they wished to replace a poor drive. It was quite a spectacle as players moved off to take up their positions, and exciting when the balloons were quickly taken up high by the strong wind.
A one handicap player was even observed letting off his balloon!!
We are grateful to Tile Shapes of Hemel Hempstead for their sponsorship of this event. We’d love to hear from anyone who found one of the balloons, and wonder how far they travelled! Do let us know.
The day is aimed at corporate entertainment, and many local firms and businesses took the opportunity to entertain clients and customers or preferred to become sponsors, or donate prizes for the Auction and Raffle which took place during dinner in the evening. It would be invidious to pick out any one such firm – at least 85 local firms were involved – and we are indebted to them all for such willing and generous support. However, I must add our particular thanks to the Austrian National Tourist Office who not only donated two extremely generous prizes for the Auction and entered a team but also provided a tempting array of schnapps, ham, cheese and chocolates for players as they passed their hospitality tent – warmly welcomed and enjoyed by all participants – and in some cases, even improving the golf!
The winning team were Relicpride Construction Co. from Edgware with 111 points, followed closely by Bellway Homes, Ruislip, with 109 points. It may be of interest to note that a total of 237 balls were lost by players in the round (the tough rough and high winds contributing to such a large number this year), and the prize for guessing how many it might be was won by Terry Campion.
We are indebted to everyone who has contributed in whatever way to the success of the day, but we are particularly grateful to Sandy Lodge Golf Club for their generosity in providing the course and clubhouse for this event over all seven years since its inauguration in 2002 – the directors, members and staff all make a significant contribution for which Michael Sobell House is most appreciative.
Perhaps next year you or your firm might be interested in entering a team or becoming a sponsor thus becoming pro-active in supporting the wonderful work and care given at MSH. If so, do let us know – contact Pam Montgomery, 01923 824847 or email pmontgomery@michaelsobellhouse.co.uk
