Lights are symbolic and central to different religions
and bring a particular comfort
during the darker months of the year, the season of
remembrance.
Christian Tradition
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever
follows me will never walk in
darkness but will have the light of my life.”
(1 John 1.5)
Jewish Tradition
Then God said, “Let there be light; and there
was light.” (Genesis 1.3)
Islamic Tradition
“Praise be to God who created the heavens and
earth and made the Darkness
and Light.” (The Quran 6.1)
Hindu Tradition
“O Father, lead thy kindly light so that we follow
the path of Truth and Righteousness.”
(from Gayatri Mantra)
Humanist Tradition
‘Light’ is a metaphor for all things positive
and beneficial. For Humanists the guiding
light of life is the light of reason.
Light up a Life 2007
We wish to reflect the diverse religions and cultures
in the communities of
Hertfordshire and Middlesex within the Light up a Life
ceremony, as we do at
the Hospice throughout the year. The service is open
to all who wish to remember,
irrespective of faith or belief.
Everyone is welcome.
The details of this service are:
SUNDAY 2nd DECEMBER 2007
4pm at The Michael Sobell House Centre
entrance via White Hill Road
A SERVICE OF SEASONAL MUSIC
AND READINGS
Parking is available in the main Mount Vernon car parks
and refreshments will be
served in the Lecture Hall.
Please indicate on the attached
slip if you will be attending the service.
There is no charge for a light, but if you would like
to make a donation to the
hospice to help meet the needs of our continuing care,
that would be very welcome.
We hope you will join us in remembering loved ones and
absent friends by
dedicating a light that will shine on our tree until
the 6th January 2007.
