Michael Sobell Hospice in Rickmansworth have benefited from a donation from the members of Broadwater Sailing Club in excess of £6300. When Gift Aid is reclaimed the sum is likely to reach over £7000.
The event, which took place on Saturday 8th September this year, involved some 70 of the Club’s members sailing 10 dinghies for a period of 12 hours.
The race stated at 12 noon in sunny conditions. The wind being light and consistent, enabling the dinghies’, to make an excellent start on the course round Broadwater Lake, the club’s sailing venue.
Each boat changed helms at regular intervals, enabling people to relax and enjoy the club’s excellent facilities. The galley provided a consistent supply of refreshments, ably prepared by Anne Darvill and her fellow workers. The event overall was organised by Alan Darvill and a small team.
Racing continued until midnight, with the wind dropping and fine weather enabling the dinghies’ to complete the course. The end of the racing was marked by the letting off of a rocket.
The overall winner of the race was “Greg’s Girlies”, Greg and Pam Hart’s Enterprise, which completed 37 laps to qualify for the Michael Sobell
The Dorothy Smith Trophy for most sponsorship money was won by the “Mount Mascots”, crewed by relatively new members of the club, Martin Arris, Graham Woods and their team. They competed 23 laps in the 12 and raised over £1,500.00
One of the junior members, Charlotte Walford, has over £100 as a result of her making and selling excellent cakes for club members’ refreshment throughout the year during Sunday racing.
The club has now donated over £13,000 to Michael Sobell House over the last two years.
The presentation of the Trophies and prizes took place on the 28th October with the Chairman of the Friends of Michael Sobell House receiving the cheque.
