On
29th October 2006 Steve Mitchell and Matt Newberry are
aiming to complete the Snowdonia marathon, the hardest
marathon in Europe, in memory of Pauline Mitchell, mum
and mother-in-law to them.
The race starts at Nant Peris (300ft) on the A4086 and
then climbs to the top of the Llanberis Pass (Pen y
Pass 1,100ft).
It follows the A498 to Beddgelert (200ft) and there
continues along the A4085 to Waunfawr. From here it
is a rapid climb to about 1,200ft at Bwlch y Groes (a
short length is unmetalled) and then downhill to the
finish in Llanberis.
The demanding and spectacular route, encircling Snowdon,
Wales' and England's highest peak, has given the event
a unique place in the annual marathon calendar ever
since.
Last year they raised £3000 for Michael Sobell
House after completing a 3 week trek in Nepal, to the
Mera Peak summit 6476 meters.
Their aim is to complete every year a hard challenge
in order to raise as much money for MSH in memory of
Pauline who loved the hospice and who would be so proud
of her boys. This event will also be in memory of Anne
Gordon, who died on 12th April and who spent several
weeks in MSH before she passed away at home.
