What is MSH - Types of Care

Picture showing the types of care offeredThe team at Michael Sobell House has been providing specialist palliative care since it's inception, embracing a philosophy that is compatible with hospice care. A multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, chaplains, social workers, counsellors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, complementary therapists, housekeepers and administration staff support the unit. The unit has a focus on improving quality of life for patients by providing relief from distressing symptoms. Patients may be admitted for symptom management, rehabilitation, respite or care in the last days of life.

Palliative Day Centre - The aim of the Day Centre is to create a safe, supportive and open environment where individuals are encouraged to maintain their independence. The centre can provide advice on symptom control, counselling, complementary therapies, creative arts, crafts and outdoor activities. A number of clinical procedures are also undertaken within the Day Centre

Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy - Whether attending as an inpatient or as an outpatient both Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physiotherapy (PT) are available at Michael Sobell House. Each patient's mobility and functional difficulties can be assessed and as a result any walking equipment, such as sticks, frames or wheelchairs, can be supplied. Working together as part of the team, OT's and physiotherapists assist people to achieve their own goal in a holistic manner supporting them to live safely, independently and with dignity.

Bereavement - Our team of Bereavement Counsellors supports the families and friends of patients who died whilst under the care of Michael Sobell House. Their aim is to help by listening, allowing expression of feeling and making sense of whatever the grieving person is experiencing. This support can be provided either at Michael Sobell House or home visits, if necessary.
